Gael Greene, the brand name of restaurant box journalism for 40 years at New York magazine has been fired by the magazine, effective immediately. The magazine gave her one last hurrah with a coverline on “The Most Vital Restaurants in 40 Years” in its 40th anniversary come forth October 6, 2008, and said goodbye six weeks later.

“I describe it as cutting off your nose to spite your face,” Greene said.

At her premature “retirement” Greene was no longer the weekly critic, having questioned to be replaced in 2000, setting off an 18-month search for a replacement that brought on Adam Platt in January 2002. She remained on the masthead as a contributing editor to write her weekly column, “Insatiable Critic.”

She also made a virtual restaurant magazine of her own at www.InsatiableCritic.com.

In her role as restaurant critic, Greene helped change the way New Yorkers (and many Americans) reckon about food. A studious anthropologist could trace the evolution of New York restaurants from the ahead of schedule awakening in the 1970s on a timeline that would reflect her passions and taste over 30 years from Le Pavillon to nouvelle cuisine to couturier pizzas, pastas and hot fudge sundaes, to more healthful intake.

She has devoted as many hours to fund-raising in recent years as she does to writing. Citymeals, the largest public/private partnership in the country, has delivered more than 40 million meals to frail needy neighbors no longer able to shop or cook for themselves. The exceptional support of the food and restaurant community to the city?s elderly shut-ins has been an elemental factor in the success of this try from the very first fundraising weekend 27 Christmases ago.

Another fascinating DIY home improvement project that can raise the value of your home is replacing worn out bathroom tiles. If the tiles are more than a decade ancient and you plot on selling within the next few months, now would be the opportune time to replace the tiles.

For this project you would need a few sacks for tile disposal, a large chisel or a crow bar and a mallet or an equivalent. If possible, work the tiles when they are wet as this reduces friction and lessens dust clouds all through working. Drive the crowbar against the underside of the tiles and slowly work around the tiles.

Ease the tiles off the floor, making sure that none are left behind. Smooth white cement may be used to install the new designer tiles after the bathroom floor has been re-leveled.

Justin Ray, an interior designer for the TV show How Not to Decorate warns people:

“A terrible DIY project will always detract from the resale value. Anything that looks unprofessional, such as a terribly-fitted kitchen or uneven plastering, will get buyers wondering.”

I have had my fish tank for 2 years now and it has only ever needed fully cleaning out once a month. Why all of a sudden is it going green after only 1-2 weeks of being cleaned out? The green that is appearing in the tank is not the normal dark green algae that naturally occurs but a more mid-green colour. Nothing has changed with regards to the tank apart from the addition of a small crab but I can not see him being the problem! Any thoughts please let me know.
