First generation solar cells began with a large amount of Silicon and only single junctions.
Second Generation solar cells called thin film cells, began with much less Silicon. In addition first generation solar was improved with multiple junctions.
Third Generation Solar Cells aim to keep Silicon use low while enhancing cell efficiencies.
In addition there are technologies that blend electricity generation with heat generation. And also aim to reduce installation and system design costs through building inverters inside solar panels. There is also technologies that use multiple junctions and concentration to enhance efficiencies. And aim to use bio-based plastics to replace petroleum based plastics used as back sheets in solar panels.
Idea’s of the future include thin film concentration solar cells, thin film multi-junction cells, and thin film multi-junction concentrating cels.

But we don’t need to leave it entirely up to the governments to look after the situation, we also can play our part. One of the biggest ways we can contribute is to reduce our dependence on traditional energy resources.

The energy resources we currently use are non-renewable sources, meaning eventually our energy needs will out grow the available resources. These energy sources also give off harmful emissions, when they are extracted, refined and consumed. DIY solar power provides an alternative to these traditional energy sources. By changing the majority of our household energy needs to sources such as solar and wind power we will by default reduce the harmful impact on the environment our current energy consumption inflicts.

If that’s not an attractive enough proposition, DIY solar power also has the benefit of saving the house holder a lot of money. Conventional Solar power installations can be very expensive, with costs running into the thousands of dollars, many home owners are put off the idea as a result. Another benefit of using a non environment impacting resource such as solar is you don’t need to feel guilty about using excess power.

With DIY solar power, you not only gain the benefits of harvesting your own free energy resource you are also saving thousands of dollars on buying and implementing a traditional solar power system.

Residential solar energy systems and wind power generators are becoming more popular. More and more people are finding the benefits of generating there own electricity to power there home. With Solar energy, it can work out good to have in your home, but only if you get a moderate amount of sunlight. This is a similar problem to wind power. Wind power generators are only effective, with a moderate amount of wind.

Years ago, no one ever thought that solar powered vehicles are even possible. There are solar-powered calculators or solar batteries that can run small devices but as for solar-powered car engines, many have remained skeptical until they finally saw actual vehicles that run on the energy of the sun created for exhibits in various science and technology fairs. These days, many are already considering on the possibility that, in the next couple of years, mass-market solar powered vehicles will be available to consumers in replacement for the ones that run on oil fuel.

These days, one can see solar powered vehicles in engineering demonstrations and solar car race events.

Cost-efficient

Solar-powered vehicles are, without a doubt, more cost-efficient than the typical cars that run on oil fuel. After all, these cars harness energy from something that is abundant ‘ the energy from the sun. So long as the sun shines, these cars should be able to run just as efficiently as any other type of vehicle. Because they run on solar power, these vehicles will also enjoy higher mileage and longer life spans according to most experts. How they work

Challenges

With solar powered vehicles, the current challenge is to create a process or a mechanism that is capable of harnessing solar energy efficiently even on places with a relatively smaller surface area such as cars roofs. Solar cells are usually effective on buildings because they are always exposed to the sun’s heat. Concentrated Solar Power

Concentrated Solar Power (or”CSP”) refers to the type of solar energy which is created by concentrating sunlight onto a small area, thus creating intense light and heat, which in turn generates power and electricity. Concentrated Solar Power is one of several alternative energy technologies which have been developed in order to harness the energy emitted by the sun and turn it into useable electricity.

The main difference between concentrated solar power (CSP) energy systems and other solar power systems (such as photovoltaics and solar heating), is that concentrated solar power uses mirrors and reflectors in order to focus concentrated sunlight on a specific location.

How Concentrated Solar Power Systems Work

A simple but accurate comparison to Concentrated Solar Power is the use of a magnifying lens to focus sunlight on a specific area. But the target of a CSP system is to heat fluids, not ants or other luckless insects.

The fluids heated by this concentrated solar energy are then turned into steam. The steam is in turn forced through a fan, and is used to drive a regular steam turbine, which uses its turning motion to generate electricity through electromagnetic means.

One advantage of concentrated solar power is that it is completely compatible with the contemporary power generators which are used in conventional power plants. But in the case of CSP solar energy, the “fuel” used to generate steam is sunlight, not fossil fuels such as oil and coal.

You may be surprised to learn that in the USA, several CSP power plants are already up and running – and that they have performed reliably for the past fifteen years.

At the time of this writing, the least expensive method of using solar power to produce electricity is the to use concentrated solar power systems.

Research and development projects are underway, with the aim of reducing costs even further, so that the cost of producing electricity with solar power can eventually compete with the costs of energy production in modern conventional power plants.

Concentrated Solar Power is one of several methods of generating solar power and alternative energy on a broad scale. Another example of broad scale solar power production is the use of solar power towers. These towers use an assortment of moving mirrors (called heliostats) to continuously reflect sunlight toward a central area at the top of the tower. These heliostats are set up so that they follow the movement of the sun, thus maintaining the strongest reflecting power possible.

A photovoltaic module or solar panel is made up of about 40 photovoltaic cells. “Photovoltaic module” and “photovoltaic cell” are the “technical terms” for “solar panel” and “solar cell.” When a photovoltaic module is used to charge batteries it is commonly referred to as a “solar battery charger.” Several photovoltaic modules or panels arranged alongside each other are referred to as a “photovoltaic array” or a “solar array.” The usual setup for a system in the home consists of an array consisting of ten to twelve panels or photovoltaic modules. The color of the panels varies, depending on what material is used to make the cells inside the panel. Energy from the sun can be collected by hybrid chargers and used to recharge batteries, or to recharge cell phones and other gadgets directly.
